Problem Statement:

Living with roommates can often be challenging due to difficulties in managing tasks, tracking expenses, and communicating effectively. Current solutions lack integration and fail to provide a seamless experience for users, leading to frustration and inefficiency in shared living arrangements.

"How might we improve communication for better coordination among roommates?"

Solution:

RoomieMate, a comprehensive mobile application that simplifies shared living by seamlessly integrating task management, expense tracking, and communication tools. With RoomieMate, users can efficiently coordinate tasks, split expenses, and communicate effectively with roommates, fostering harmony and efficiency in shared living arrangements.

Research

User interviews and surveys were conducted to gather insights into the pain points and needs of individuals living with roommates.

Goals for interview.
The goals for the interview are to uncover common triggers of conflicts among roommates, understand their current modes of effective communication, explore financial disputes, identify challenges in task management, assess preferences during conflicts, gather feedback on notice board usage, gauge interest in payment features, and evaluate attitudes towards shared responsibilities.

Key Insights:

After gathering our survey results, we listed out 4 important findings. Here’s what we established after discussing our survey results:
Roommates commonly experience conflicts due to disagreements over household cleanliness, sharing personal belongings, and noise levels.
Roommates are open to sharing responsibilities such as grocery shopping, household chores, and maintenance tasks but desire a fair and transparent system for accountability.
Roommates struggle with inconsistent task delegation, missed deadlines for shared responsibilities, and unequal distribution of chores.
Financial disputes often arise from delayed bill payments, discrepancies in shared expense contributions, and disagreements over utility usage.

Features

Homepage: The homepage serves as the central hub where users can access essential features. A notice board displays important announcements, reminders, and house rules. Users can view their assigned tasks and upcoming deadlines. A list of roommates is displayed for easy access to profiles and communication allows for seamless planning and scheduling.
Payment Features: Users can easily settle debts or split bills using the payment feature. The app calculates individual shares based on predefined settings or manual inputs. Users can request money from roommates for shared expenses, such as utilities or groceries. Payment history and receipts are accessible for transparency and accountability.
Chats: A dedicated chat feature allows users to communicate with roommates in real-time. Group chats can be created for discussing shared responsibilities or planning events. Users can share files, images, and links to facilitate coordination. Message notifications ensure timely responses and updates.
Shared Features: This section highlights shared amenities or responsibilities within the living space. Users can view and update shared grocery lists, chore schedules, or household rules. Collaborative features promote teamwork and accountability among roommates.
Tasks Page: The tasks page provides a comprehensive overview of assigned responsibilities. Users can create, assign, and track tasks with due dates and priority levels. Task status updates and notifications keep users informed and accountable. Integration with calendar apps allows for seamless planning and scheduling.
